Jasper is classified as an opaque variety of silica from the family of quartz. It can come in almost any color but most commonly as red, yellow, brown, or green.
Two different Hebrew words are translated as jasper in the bible, "yashĕpheh" and "iaspis." Yashĕpheh was the term in Exodus 28:20 and 39:13 for describing the last or twelfth jewel in the Breastplate of Aaron, the High Priest.
